You may want to place photos onto the web. This page deals with that process.

There are several; ways to get photos that you can put onto the web. Use your graphics editor to clip out unnecessary space in the photograph (crop the image). The larger the photo, the longer it will take to load. So you want to remove as much of the photo as you can without cropping people out of the picture. I once visited a page that sported a large chorus photo at the top of its page and also had embedded sound. I gave up waiting for it to load.

When placing photos of people onto the web, keep in mind that the general rule is:

So what are the sources for your photos?

  1. If someone has a digital camera, this is the easiest way. You simply snap photos and load them directly into a computer, saving them in jpg format.
  2. You can have them developed and then scan them in if you have a scanner available. You can also rent scanner time at some public commercial locations.
  3. If you do not have a digital camera available and you do not have a scanner, then there is yet another inexpensive alternative. In fact, even if you have a scanner, you may like this one, since it saves a lot of time. Find a local place where you can submit your film for developing and have it returned to you in hard copy pictures as usual and on a disk. CVS for example offers this option, but that is not the only place that does. It takes about a week to get them back, but it saves hours of scanning. The disk you get back contains the jpg files and a program for viewing. This method has the disadvantage that you must wait for it, and you may not have any useable pictures in the lot.
  4. Visit Seattle Filmworks. They have a plan whereby you mail your film to them. You can then (given the right amount of time) visit their site and download your pictures. They also provide a viewing program which allows you to set up a slide show on your computer - complete with fade-ins/fade-outs.This program is called Photoworks.   They would also like to sell you a more powerful program than the one that shows up on your photo diskette. That one is called Photoworks Plus. The cost is minimal, and it is worth it - only about $15! They will even provide you with free film! However, they do charge more than other places for developing (they claim it is because they give you better quality...).
  5. Other sources similar to Seatlle Filmworks include www.ofoto.com and www.snapfish.com . Snapfish got very favorable reviews by TIm Barmann in his Providence Journal review of web-based photo services.
